Dragon Fruit: The Tropical Wonder that Blooms at Night
February 10, 2026
A Strange Fruit Guarded by Night
Dragon fruit is the fruit of a cactus species, originally from Central America. Today, cultivation has expanded in Taiwan’s Pingtung and Nantou regions, with quality improving year by year.
The Spectacle of Night-Blooming
One of the most distinctive features of dragon fruit is that its flowers only bloom at night. The large, white flowers emit a rich fragrance to attract nocturnal insects for pollination. The flowering period lasts only a few short hours, and by the next morning, the flowers close and wither.
Red Flesh vs. White Flesh
Taiwan’s dragon fruit cultivation mainly divides into red flesh and white flesh:
- Red Flesh: Contains anthocyanins, vivid color, strong antioxidant capacity, higher sweetness
- White Flesh: Crisper texture, moderate sweetness, with a light refreshing aroma
Nutritional Value
Dragon fruit is rich in vitamin C, dietary fiber, iron, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Its black seeds, similar to kiwi, contain rich unsaturated fatty acids beneficial for cardiovascular health.
Creative Ways to Enjoy
Beyond scooping directly from half a fruit, dragon fruit can be made into smoothies, jelly, salads, or used in cooking. Its vivid purplish-red color is also often used as natural food coloring for desserts or beverages.
